Being a fool is something brought upon yourself when you act like an idiot or an ass. Being fooled is when you get tricked and be made to look foolish. Therefore you could be a fool but never be fooled.

If you bring it own yourself you are "acting the fool" but your not really a fool for it is acting, if you get fooled alot you are foolish and are labeled just plain and simply a fool, for you are not acting in anyway while you are being fooled.
